And since we've started renovating and there are just so many things I want to remember and document, I figured it was time to bring the old blog back to life.

Before we were married, my {now} husband and I were looking for a place to rent. A few months of being home from college made me realize JUST how nice independence really was :) Anyway, as a 7D girl, my mom and I would drive to Colton's Point to take walks around the neighborhood, my brothers best friend lived there, and it was the closest place to go to see the sunrise. So, when the ad popped up online that the cute waterfront cottage that we always thought would be "so cute if it was fixed up" was for rent, I jumped on it.

After a phone call to the owner, we realized her family and my family were connected in more ways than one. My Dad and her brother were friends in their younger years, and her nephew and my brother were friends all the way through high school. She asked to meet with us prior to signing any lease agreements to "make sure we were the right fit for her house". The stars aligned, and we were the new tenants of the little cottage by the river that I always admired.

Fast forward a few years, we're married and wanting to buy our own home or land. We let our landlord know that we were looking to buy something, but that we'd give her as much notice as possible before we broke the lease. It never even crossed my mind to ask her about buying the cottage from her since I knew just how deeply rooted her family history was with this house. But she shocked us both when she called one day to ask if we'd like to buy the cottage. Floored feels more like the right word for my reaction. "If we can swing it or make it work, yes, YES, of course we do!"

When we went to settlement, she told us that she knew she was making the right decision because she could see just how much we loved and appreciated her family cottage. And if we ever decided to sell it, to call her first. I'm so glad she could see just how much I LOVED this cottage and trusted us with it.

So here we are, about 10 years later, still loving life at Point Breeze Cottage (a name we lovingly bestowed on the old girl). My goal with this home is to preserve her history, keep her story, but give her the facelift, love and attention necessary to fit our growing family.

I hope you follow along with me here and over on instagram {@pointbreezecottage } for a glimpse into what life along the Potomac River has to offer, some historical throwbacks related to our cottage and the family who lived here prior, and the renovations and hard work that have gone into making her our own, all while honoring her past as well. I'll even throw in a few ghost stories and famous faces along the way.

Thanks for being here!
Mindy
Mindyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12022601702101269193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5310096727447283254.post-75726740642451745012015-08-11T16:21:00.000-04:002015-08-11T16:21:38.025-04:00Cottage Renovation: Kitchen In the kitchen we changed the paint color and added a mud room where there used to be a bathroom off the side of the kitchen. It wasn't really in the plans to update the kitchen, but we figured it was the perfect time to update the wall colors and improve on our table and eating area.

I'll share some photos of the entire kitchen soon, but for now take a look at our new kitchen table, custom built-in benches and new-used chairs!

During the renovation there was a little problem with some measurements for our windows in the master bedroom. We were supposed to reuse some of our existing windows, but the openings were a tad too small. So we bought two additional windows and weren't sure what to do with the originals. Just when we were thinking about donating them to Habitat for Humanity my mom came up with a great idea... take out the small, half size windows in the kitchen and replace them with the larger windows from the bedroom. Props to her, because it has opened up the kitchen and allowed SO MUCH beautiful light to shine in! I knew I wanted to turn that area into a booth of sorts, and my awesome grandfather, Pa, helped me out with that. He custom made these beautiful built-in benches that open up for storage! I can't thank him enough, they are perfect!

During one of my softball games at Back Road Inn, Bubba and my friend Kelli made their way over to the Vintage Source who was having their annual summer sale. I couldn't believe my ears when he came back with the news that he saw a table that might work perfectly in our kitchen. Though it's a little big and we had to raise it up about an inch or two, it ended up being exactly what we were looking for! A great mix of country farm style and the streamlined, modern metal.

These sweet little chairs were funky, old and filthy when I found them at the Bargain Barn in Hughesville.

I found the bench cushions in a store called At Home in Florida while I was down there visiting my brother and soon-to-be sister-in-law. I'd searched everywhere in Southern Maryland with no luck, so when I walked into At Home and saw 4 huge aisles chocked full of cushions I couldn't pass them up. Shoved them into an extra suit case and flew them home with us, and they were a great fit. I underestimated how many I'd need, so my sweet sister-in-law is working on getting me another one. :)

Which made for some very uncomfortable moments during parties and dinners. So one of our main missions during the renovation was to get the bathroom OUT of the kitchen and have more than one. And we were able to do just that! We now have a master bathroom off our bedroom and a guest bathroom for the rest of the house. And for this post, here are a few shots of the guest bathroom:
Our original plan was to turn our old bedroom into our new master, but after several outtakes we decided to readjust our plans. We turned the majority of the new addition into the master bedroom and sitting room.

It's been a couple of months since we completed construction and moved back in to our house, and I'm finally getting around to posting some "after" photos. I still don't feel like it's complete since it's not fully decorated, but it's a start. With that said, I'm going to start with some of the landscaping we've been working on and added since the addition. Really most of it was here before, but since it was starting to bloom out I thought I'd snap a few pictures.
My grandmother and I worked hard one day to get all of the original, old hardware off the doors (which is NOT easy after almost 100 years of paint coated over top of them). I used a trick I learned from watching The Rehab Addict, Nicole Curtis, on HGTV. After I removed them from the doors I kept them separated by door and places them in a crock pot of hot water. No chemicals, just boiling water. And it worked! I did have to scrub quite a bit, but it still came off easier than trying to scrape it off.

Pretty neat, and a great way to reuse some of the original pieces to the house and keep it's character!
And I'm proud to say that Bubba and I started and finished this project together. Without fighting. Not ONCE! It's sad, but that's a pretty huge accomplishment when working on a home with your spouse. We can't all be like my favorite TV couple, Fixer Uppers Chip and Jo Jo Gains. LOVE THEM...

Anyway, here is a little sneak peek of our faux hardwood laminate flooring in Fireside Oak. We used this flooring throughout the living room, hallway, bedrooms, and mudroom. We decided on tile floors for the bathrooms since they are so small and we found a nice deal on some very pretty tile. But for now, here is a look at the floor installation process.
In fact, we are almost done putting in our floors, baseboards, trim, etc. But when it comes to updating the old blog here, it just seems to take me SO LONG!

So, without further delay, here are our painted walls! Ok, I'm missing the master bathroom, and the lighting still isn't complete, making for some not so wonderful photos, but it will still give an idea of what we've decided to go with...

It took us a while to decide on paint colors. For being something that can so easily be changed, for some reason I just couldn't commit to anything. After some serious thought and a little research on paint colors in the home, I decided to try and keep the colors complimentary to each other. For example, when we made over the living room a couple years ago we decided to use a very bold blue called Swizzle Stick. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful and I love it, but it's pretty out there for me. I'm typically very conservative. Anyway, in the living room we did an accent wall in the front of the house in a soft color called Desert Fortress. It's so easy on the eyes, you almost don't even notice it. And since our house is pretty open, we decided it might be a nice color to have throughout the house in order to tie it all together.

Here we have the mud room and the master bedroom, painted in Desert Fortress.

Again, these pictures aren't really doing the colors justice, but it's just to document and give any curious minds a peek!

Next, is the sitting room, which is actually accessed through the master bedroom. I wanted the colors to be different, but not so different that it looks silly. So I went one shade lighter on the paint chip card and went for Riviera Dune. It's very light, and was pretty difficult to see while applying, but I think it's a good choice. We also painted the "alcove" where our bed will be going in the Riviera Dune as another way to tie in the two colors.

Yeah, the shadows aren't really doing anything to help here....

Then we have the guest room and the guest bathroom. These two rooms are a little further off the color wheel then what we have in the rest of the house, but none-the-less are still very pretty. The guest room got a nice double coat of Lemon Cream. I'm planning to do this sweet little room in blues, creams, and soft yellows, so I thought this color would be a way to bring a pop of color to the house without being something so bright or bold that we would get sick of it too quickly. I also, in the back of my mind, thought that some day when we have a child, whether a boy or a girl, they could take up residency in there. A neutral yellow :)

Across the hall you'll find the guest bathroom in a Woodlawn Colonial Gray. The only color that really doesn't tie too well into the rest of the house. But it's really clean and classic. And considering that I have an affinity for black and white art and decor, I thought this would be my Black and White room. I'm really pleased with how it is turning out too.

Please excuse the HOT MESS that is our house right now, but we are under construction! :) Like I said, I wasn't able to get any shots of the master bathroom and closet, but for the record they are done in Dove White. I'll be sure to get a few photos once our electricity is wired back up and we have some light back there.

And with adding on to the house, it would be almost impossible to side the new portion of the house and it even come close to matching. So, we said goodbye to our rustic, original siding from 1929. But don't worry, we're going to preserve a couple pieces to use for projects inside of the house.
Though I was resistant at first, as we move forward, I'm so glad that we made the switch. Now we will be leaving the sitting room open (no door) and accessible only through our bedroom. It gives us a beautiful view and open feel we wanted for our Master Bedroom. We will also now have a Master Bath and Walk-in Closet accessible from our bedroom.

These pictures are from November 23rd. We've done so much since then, but I wanted to make sure I have the progress documented.

Looking from the sitting room towards the back of the house where our bed will be. We'll have built in shelving inside the alcove along with recess lighting and switches on both side of the bed.

Thanksgiving 2014

It's that time of the year again, the time that we all sit down and list out the things we are thankful for. Though we should reflect year-round on the things we are thankful for, sometimes it just doesn't happen that way. So here I am, to do my yearly reflection on the things I'm thankful for.

1. Life. Cliche as it may be, I am thankful for another day, every day. There are people who are trapped in a country where they cannot live the life they desire. There are some who do not know if they'll make it to see another day. And there are those who have lost their lives much too soon. So for me, I'm thankful for the life I have. It's by no means perfect, but it's mine, and I am thankful to have it.

2. Health. At a glance, my health wouldn't appear to be something anyone would be thankful for. In the past year I've suffered from extreme head and face pain, leading to a diagnosis of Trigeminal Neuralgia; Anxiety and panic attacks, which I am working hard to overcome without any medication; A nasty bout of Salmonella poisoning; A continuous battle with Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome and a recurring cyst on my right ovary; Several pre-cancerous cells on my back that needed to be removed; An auto-immune deficiency causing terrible itching in certain places on my body; and most recently I've battled through Shingles. All of these things have knocked me on my bottom, but I've been able to persevere by knowing that it could ALWAYS be worse. My body is strong, despite these issues. And that is why I am thankful for my health, because God wouldn't test someone who couldn't handle it.

3. Home. As featured so prominently on this blog, I'm so proud of and thankful for the place I call home. Almost seven years ago when we started renting our lovely little cottage by the sea I never would have dreamed that one day I would own it. But we do, and we are working on making it our own. Our home is a place of comfort, love and peace.

4. Family. What would a thankful Thanksgiving post be without saying I'm thankful for my family?! Well, I am. I've always known this, and I've always been thankful for a strong, close-knit family. Family is your blood and that bonds you like no other. Whether you are upset with each other or sharing moments of pure joy, your family is always there to experience these things with you. Though some of us are spread out a little further than we'd like these days, it only brings us closer.

5. Harper. My sweet, sweet baby girl. I'd always said I "wasn't a dog person", but that was before a little beagle runt stole my heart. As a newborn pup she was feisty, a fighter and just as cute as a button. Terrified of change, I wasn't sure I wanted to bring her home and add a dog to our lives, but I am so glad we did. I can't bare the thought of not having her in our lives, because she really does complete us. She is love. She is adventure. She is pure beagle and I love her dearly!

Once you start tearing out walls and pulling off siding you are likely to find some structural challenges. And despite my best efforts to wish away any old school problems, they crept right up to slow down our progress. Luckily, the biggest speed bump we've encountered so far wasn't really that big. The hip style of our roof has required us to use some headers in places we weren't planning for, causing us to rethink some of the room and closet placements. And lets be honest here....after several days of heated "discussions", re-drawn floor plans, and even a first by Bubba to change the layout, we finally compromised and came up with a functional and really great solution!

We've decided to make our former master bedroom into the guest room and what was supposed to be the guest room our master bedroom. Now, you'll enter our new sitting room from our bedroom, as well as a master bathroom and a (small) walk-in closet. It's also going to have some custom built shelving. I can't wait to watch it all unfold, it will be so nice to have a removed, personal space of our own and not feel like our bedroom is on display for all visitors to see.

For today though, I wanted to share some pictures of the work we've gotten done this past week. Our contractor and plumber came in and demoed the bathroom and exposed all of the piping. I'm still not sure how the two of them got the cast iron tub out of the house, but they did it!
Our is pretty old. In fact, while signing our settlement papers last week, we were given an old plat of the neighborhood from 1891!! There is so much history here and that is why we just love it. And it's also while we are trying to preserve as much of our cottage, built in 1929, that we can. As beautiful, spacious, and luxurious as so many of the newly built homes and neighborhoods in St. Mary's County are, I wouldn't trade what we have here for anything. It's peaceful here, minus a few negligent neighbors, and that is what makes our long commutes worth it.

The weather has been wicked this weekend. Icy cold and winds that just won't stop. So we didn't get too much work done on the addition. Bubba and Pa, my grandfather, were able to finish off the side wall and a few other small items, and we also made our way down to Lowes to buy the new windows for the front of the house. All 6 of them!
They were able to take the biggest challenge, extending the roof, and make it work seamlessly! I just love the hip roof that was on the house when we bought it. And it isn't that old, so I was really hoping that we'd be able to just extend the roof, rather than take the entire thing off. They mulled it over for a while and they finally decided to keep the hip style, add a dormer to the side facing our driveway, and to create an overhang by the back door. And I just love it! It is staying true to the original style of the house, but updating it enough to make it functional.
He must have been quite the helper too because when I came home the house looked totally different! My grandfather only lives ten minutes away, so he decided to come down around lunch time to see if there was anything he could help with too. They were both still working when I pulled in the driveway and finished up just before dark. I'm so lucky to have such hardworking men in my life!
